This pic was taken in March. It was taken just for fun and little did i realised that there was something wrong with those leaves. At first glance i thought that they were normal.

What actually happens to the leaves? That question need an answer. After much thought, i need to go back to this location, but going back was not easy. Need to have a valid reason and recently i got one.

When i first create Discomfort Zone about 18 months ago, i do notice that Kapit do have bloggers, but only a handful are really active. At that time, there were about 40 bloggers who are 'always there' when you clicked on "kapit".

Over the months the numbers keep on increasing, some come and go, but others stay and today the numbers stood at 200 plus.

I do notice that the first page of kapit profiles is filled with colourfull characters and personalities. They blogged about wide range of topics.

Malaysia braces for possible flu outbreak

Malaysia is bracing itself for a possible outbreak of influenza A (H1N1) following the discovery of its second confirmed case.

Health deputy director-general Datuk Dr Ramlee Rahmat assured the people that government hospitals and clinics, as well as private hospitals were prepared to handle out breaks of influenza A.

The latest case involves a female friend of the 21-year-old male student who was quarantined at Sungai Buloh Hospital on Friday after it was confirmed that he had the virus.

The two were on Malaysia Airlines flight MH091 from Newark, New Jersey, United States, which arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Wednesday.

Dr Ramlee said all passengers who were on the same flight were duty bound to report to the health authorities.

“The state health departments have been directed to track them down,” said Dr Ramlee yesterday.

In the worst-case scenario, Dr Ramlee said action could be taken against them under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

Of the 192 passengers and 15 crew members on board the flight, 119 (81 Malaysians and 38 foreigners) are still in the country.

Malaysia confirms first Influenza A(H1N1) case

Malaysia has reported its first influenza A(H1N1) case involving a student who returned from the United States two days ago.

This was confirmed by Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai today.

"The student is now quarantined at the Sungai Buloh Hospital," he told Bernama from London.

"The student returned to Malaysia on May 13 and the next day, he sought treatment when he felt unwell. The test confirmed that he has the H1N1 virus."

Liow, enroute to Geneva, Switzerland to attend the World Health Organisation (WHO) General Assembly, was on transit in London.
He said health personnel were in the midst of tracking down all passengers on the flight and those who had come into contact with the student since his return.

"This is urgent and all have to work together to prevent the spread of the disease in this country. We have initiated various preventive measures and the health department is working hard on the ground," he said.

Liow also advised the public to be on high alert and immediately seek treatment if they feel unwell.

No indiscriminate open burning, warns NREB

Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) yesterday identified a number of illegal open burning activities in Sibu.

NREB Controller of Environmental Quality Dr Penguang Manggil in stating this said the board viewed the matter seriously and was taking steps to curb the problem.

He warned industries as well as individuals not to re-sort to indiscriminate open burning, adding that during the dry spell bushes and forests caught fire easily.

Penguang made the remarks when contacted in Kuching yesterday.

According to him, the NREB is monitoring the hot spots through satellite and GPS to ensure the culprits could be identified and action taken against them.

He said the board had restricted the number of permits issued to the industrial sector in the state for open burning.

If the current dry spell kept on, he said, NREB would continue to reduce the number of permits issued as part of the efforts to see the haze situation is under control.

He warned that offenders could be slapped with a maximum compound of RM30,000 under the NREB Ordinance 1993.

He said if brought to court they were liable to a fine of RM30,000 or three years in jail or both.

Meanwhile, he said NREB enforcement officers in all divisions are monitoring the hot spot areas to ensure all parties adhered to the set conditions on open burning activities.

“I’ve instructed all my officers to be on the alert for open burning activities, especially those involving the plantation sector to avoid occurrence of haze,” he added.

The Long-nosed Horned Frog (Megophrys nasuta) or the Malayan Horned Frog is a species of frog restricted to the rainforest areas of southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia to Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo.

Physical description

This species is a large frog ranging from 100-120 mm in length. They are light to dark brown on the dorsal surface with varying patterns and camouflage very well with the forest floor. The throat is black-dark brown and diffuses into cream-yellow halfway along the ventral surface. The upper eyelids and snout are drawn out into long triangular projections, forming what looks like "horns", giving them their common name. There are two pairs of dorsolateral skin folds running down this species back. One pair starts behind the eye and ends near the groin, the other pair starts at corner of the eye and ends roughly halfway between the armpit and groin. The dorsum has randomly scattered, enlarged tubercles. Arms and legs are barred with skin folds and are mottled cream and different shades of brown. The toes are slightly webbed and the fingers are free from webbing. The tympanum is indistinct and the iris is golden brown.

Ecology and behaviour

This species lives in permanently damp and cool lowland and submontane rainforests among leaf litter. The call is a loud, resonating, metallic "honk" or "henk". Breeding takes place in streams, female frogs attach the eggs to the underside of partially or full submerged rocks or logs. The capsules are large and few in number. This species may lie still on the forest floor waiting for an unsuspecting prey item to pass by, they then lash out and engulf the prey. They typically feed on spiders, small rodents, lizards and other frogs.

Red Crescent Malaysia has started seeking donations from the Public. This is a yearly event and has been carried out for many years. For any donor that donates, a small sticker bearing the red crescent logo will be handed to them as a sign of appreciation......i guess.

Those involving in this drive are usually School Children representing the various schools around Sibu town. These school children are seen in groups, with their Red Crescent T Shirts.

These School Children are very motivated in collecting donations. Is there some sort of competition among them? As parents, how do you feel that when your children are seen in front of of gambling outlets asking for donation?

Is the end really important that whatever mean is justified?

This hospital museum is in memory of philanthropist Lau King Howe who donated a piece of land for the first Government hospital in Sibu. The hospital is no more there but Lau's name continues to be an inspiration to the people."

This is an early photo of the Lau King Howe Hospital of Sibu. Later it expanded to become a bigger hospital. But in the 80's the Sibu General Hospital was built in Oya Road and this hospital which saved many lives slowly disappeared into oblivion and disuse. Only a small part of the building is left to become a mini museum. A huge piece of the original land has been used up for urban development of Sibu.

Kabong once upon a time was a prime supplier of ripe coconut for the Sibu and Sarikei market. The supply was steady and could meet the demand and no problem of shortage. But that was many years ago. Now the scenario has changed dramatically. Many time, ripe coconut was scarce and the price of Santan (coconut milk) rose up.

What caused the problem? On my trip to Kabong recently that i found out that, the coconut trees had grown old and less productive. Besides, the land for coconut has been planted with palm oil instead of replanted with coconuts.

Besides coconut, Kabong is also producing Mempelam (a type of Mango) which commands a good market price.....a kilo of young fruit could fetch a price of RM 6.00 t0 RM 8.00. Now Mempelam trees are still flowering (on the right side of the pic).

The coconut tree on the left is at the prime age and bearing a lot of fruit. This was the common sight many years ago. In the fore ground you could see green vegetation. This is not grass but paddy field. Harvesting has just been completed. Soon they will be having Pesta Beras Wangi (Fragrance Rice Festival). Is Kabong also producing Fragrance Rice?

Suman Pais from Kabong

Suman Pais is usually made by the Malays of the Coastal Regions of former Sri Aman Division. Kabong is one of such village; a traditional Malay Fishing Village in the Betong Division.

Suman Pais is cooked over a slow burning fire, usually by means of firewood. Bakau is the more preferred wood.

Suman Pais is basically seafood mixed with sago flour and wrapped in Nipah leaf and cooked over a slow burning fire. Sounds so easy but actually not so.......

Sago flour or Lemantak as it called locally has to be mixed in the right potions of water, salt and seafood. The choice of seafood will be something like fish,cuttle fish,prawn and even liver of sting ray..........its your choice.

Suman Pais is best eaten when hot. Maybe you should know that Lemantak is very starchy and thus gets harden or tough when cold.

Giant Mudskippers are carnivorous, aggressively hunting mainly arthropods (e.g., insects) and crustacea. These are caught on the mud, or while the fish is swimming in the water. They may even eat smaller mudskippers.

Mudskippers are found along the intertidal zone, living happily on the margin of land and sea. They have special adaptations to help them dominate a habitat which few other animals can exploit: soft mud with fluctuating water quantities and qualities.

Horseshoe crabs possess five pairs of gills located just behind their appendages that allow them to breathe underwater, and can also allow them to breathe on land for short periods of time, provided the gills remain moist.

Although most arthropods have mandibles, the horseshoe crab is jawless. The mouth is located in the middle of the underside of the cepahalothorax with chelicerae located at each side of the mouth. In the female, the four large legs are all alike, and end in pincers. In the male, the first of the four large legs is modified, with a bulbous claw that serves to lock the male to the female while she deposits the eggs and he waits to fertilize them.

The Horseshoe Crab has blue blood, as it uses copper rather than iron as the base of its system.

Limulus has been extensively used in research into the physiology of vision. It has four compound eyes and each ommatidium feeds into a single nerve fibre. Furthermore the nerves are large and relatively accessible. This made it possible for electrophysiologists to record the nervous response to light stimulation easily, and to observe visual phenomena likelateral inhibition working at the cellular level. More recently, behavioral experiments have investigated the functions of visual perception in Limulus.

Limulus has two large compound eyes on the sides of its head, which have monochromatic vision. The individual ommatidia are complex, consisting of upwards of 300 cells; they number around a thousand, and are somewhat messily arranged, not falling into the ordered hexagonal pattern seen in more derived arthropods. An additional simple eye is positioned at the rear of each of these structures. In addition to these obvious structures, it also has two smaller ocelli situated in the middle-front of its carapace, which may superficially be mistaken for nostrils. A further simple eye is located beneath these, on the underside of the carapace. A further pair of simple eyes are positioned just in front of the mouth. The simple eyes are probably important during the embryonic or larval stages of the organism, and even unhatched embryos seem to be able to sense light levels from within their buried eggs. The less sensitive compound eyes, and the median ocelli, become the dominant sight organisms during adulthood.

The individual ommatidia of the compound eyes of Limulus Among other senses, they have a small sense organ which senses on the triangular area formed by the exoskeleton beneath the body near the ventral eyes.

Hagar the Horrible

Hägar (sometimes written sans umalut) is an overweight,red -bearded Viking who regularly raids England and sometimes France. The humor of the comic strip comes from his interactions with his longship crew (his first mate, contrary to depictions of Vikings as big-muscled warriors, is a short, naïve warrior named Lucky Eddie) and, when he is not on his voyages or in the tavern, his wife Helga, their son Hamlet, daughter Honi, Helga's pet duck Kvack, and Hägar's dog Snert.

Since Dik Browne's retirement in 1988 (and subsequent death), his son Christ has continued the comic.

Major characters

The major characters in the strip include:

Hägar ("the Horrible"): the Danish Viking protagonist
Helga: Hagar's large, bossy housewife

Express boat such as shown here ply these rivers. It's the cheapest and fastest means for movement of people and goods.
From Sibu to Sarikei, the journey takes less than 3 hours........about 70km and cost RM4.00 (1USD=RM3.60).
These type of express boats are famous in the 70's and over the years, they are transformed both in appearance and speed.

Transporting fuel for the logging industry is a very dangerous business. Diesel and petrol that are needed to run the machineries are transported by tankers like the one shown in this pic.

The tankers begin their journey all the way from Sibu and this could take days to reach their final destination.

This transport vessels usually go upstream when the water level in river is high. When rain comes and the river level rises, then you'll see these vessels making their trips upriver. Over the shot period when the water level is high and suitable for navigation........you'll see a lot of these tankers, day and night.

Locally know as paku Kelindang and usually found growing near logging camps road.

Pounded leaves are applied as a paste to boils. Shoots are used in a similar way for sores.

The young leaves are edible . The sap from the young shoot is a bit sticky, just like glue. It is this sticky stuff that is being used as medicine.

The grown up leaves are tough and hardy. Usually it can be used as thatch for shelter against rain or shine.

During the height of the flood, the jetty was totally submerged and those users have to find an alternative place for berthing.

When the water receded, mud was deposited and formed a thick layer. With so much mud in the water, it was not hard to imagine that the folks in Sibu put a total blame on silting of the mighty Rejang as the major cause for flooding in Sibu.

It was raining for almost 24 hours the day before and the water level was rising fast. This pic was taken at about 1730 on Thursday. At noon the water level was about 5 feet lower.

This morning, at about 0730 hrs, this is how the water level looks like and the flow was fast. If today, no rain recorded from the upper reaches of Rajang and Balleh, the water level will drops. By estimate, this water will reach Sibu within the next 24 hours or so.

The Sarawak Government Almanac recorded that the next King Tide will occur from 7 February to 14 February 2009. The high water level will climb from 5.5m to 6.2m and stays at that level for 3 days (10-12.02.09)

I won't be in Sibu.......but then i could imagine.

Nanga Gaat :44 years later

On 12 April 1965 when returning form a troop lift and in formation prior to landing, two Wessex 1s piloted by Lieutenant R Robertson RN and Sub Lieutenant J C Hapgood RN collided and both aircraft plunged out of control into the river. Both pilots were killed as well as NAM A Rothwell, who was the Aircrewman in Hapgood’s Wessex, 2nd Lieutenant C J Johnson, Sgt P McNeilly, L/Cpl W H Murray, and Pte R G Green from 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment and L/Cpl W J Jack from the Royal Army Medical Corps. Only three survived, the Petty Officer Crispin who was the Aircrewman from Robertson’s aircraft and two men from the Parachute Regiment. Crispin had a miraculous escape as he was flung out of the rear cabin door on his dispatcher harness, but was quick enough to release himself and fall into the river sustaining only relatively minor injuries.

44 years latter, parts of the wreckage could still be seen.

Eventhough the accident happens more than 4 decades ago, the serial numbers are still read able.

Nanga Gaat :Wessex Helicopters

Picture on the left shows Nanga Gaat of the 1965 and on the right that of 1995. In the early days of Malaysia, this site, where Sungei Gaat meets Sungei Balleh was the base for Wessex Helicopters.

Present day, it was utilized as a log pond for a logging company. Not much change for the landscape.

As part of Britain’s response during the Confrontation with Indonesia, HMS Albion deployed to the region with Royal Marines and 845 and 846 Naval Air Squadron embarked. 845 NAS deployed to Sibu in Sarawak and also established a forward operating base at Nanga Gaat in November 1963. Detachments from 845 NAS served at Nanga Gaat from 1 November 1963 until 23 June 1965 and 848 NAS from 23 May 1965 to 15 September 1965. HMS Albion arrived in the area in November 1962, handed over to HMS Bulwark in February 1964, but returned later in 1965.

Initially, 845 NACS had four Wessex mark 1's and a Whirlwind 7, based at the Gaat, with six pilots and some twenty ground crew. In June 65 when 845 NACS was relieved by 848 NACS, from HMS Albion, the Wessex mark 1 was replaced with Wessex mark 5. This was a blessing as the Mark 1 had a single engine and the Mark 5 a double engine.

There was of course the unfortunate incident of the mid air collision over the Gaat.

Nanga Gaat: Memorial

Nanga Gaat memorial was build on a site overlooking Sg. Gaat and Sg.Balleh
It was erected as a form of memorial to those British Security Forces who had died at Nanga Gaat (referring to the men of 845 NAS).
The Nanga Gaat Memorial was completed and a dedication ceremony was held in mid June of 1965.

During operations in March and April 1965, there were three serious fatal accidents.

On 4 March 1965 while carrying troops of the Royal Malay Regiment, Lieutenant M R Thompson RN had an engine failure in Wessex 1 XP108 and crashed at Ulu Sungai Puro, not far from Nanga Gaat, resulting in the death of six men from the regiment and his Aircrewman, REA A J Williams.

On 9 April 1965 Lieutenant J A C Morgan RN, piloting a Hiller 12E XS164 used for liaison duties, was killed shortly after take off when his aircraft went out of control and crashed as result of losing the tail rotor to severe vibration. The tail rotor had been damaged in a previous incident and Lt Morgan had tried to make an ad hoc repair as getting a replacement in such a remote area would have taken considerable time. Apparently the first incident shaved off an inch or two from the tip of one of the tail rotor blades. In a bid to rebalance it, Lt Morgan cut off a similar amount from the other blade. Unfortunately he killed himself as a result.

Rh. Sinau is situated at Ng.Sebilat,Sg.Gaat. It's a 3o door long house. It's those few long houses that have Solar Panels for supplying electric.

Power produced is not that great, but enought for lighting , tv and ordinary house hold appliances. In rainy days like this, it's only good for lighting only.

This is the solar panel that is used for harnessing the sun's power. Solar power for Rh.Sinau was completed in 13 february 2000.

This concrete path leads to Rh.Sinau of Ng.Sebilat. The drains beside the foot path really catches my eyes. It's really an innovative way of utilizing materials that are found locally. River stones are easily found in Sungei Gaat, ie during the dry season.
By lining the drains with stones, erosion was prevented. Not only that, the foot path will be less slippery when it rains.

Rh.Sinau is situated on a high level. On the right of the pic, a cement foot path was once constructed but now it was broken due to the great flood of December 2007.
A wooden ladder was latter constructed (middle of the pic) so that the inhibants of this long house could have access to their boats (which is the only mean of transportation).

A journey to Sungei Gaat, Kapit. This is my first trip out in 2009 and there are plenty to venture inside the Discomfort Zone. It was my dream of venturing deep into the zone and visiting as much as possible the localities inside. There are almost 400 villages dwelled by various ethnic groups with Iban being the majority.

The river looks calm but the temperature was a bit cold. It was raining for days but only lightly. There was a believe that the rainy season will cease after Chinese New Year.

During the journey like this, every now and then, the call of nature have to be answered. To have a pit stop will have valueable seconds wasted. We have to race against time so that we could reach our destination dry.

As always, mother nature always have the last say. During our 3 hour plus journey we were greeted by rain and more rain. We were lucky that it did not pour.

Chronology of Random Events about Buwau98 that you should know.

1) 1990: Use the PC for the very first time, it was office one.

2) 1992: Bought my first PC. It was a 286 machine with 40 MB HDD, 2 MB of RAM and come
with a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive.

3) 1995: Bought a US Robotic modem having a speed of 6BPS so as to have an internet access.

4) 1998: This was the year that i first chat with ICQ as my playground.

5) 2000: My PC was badly attacked by viruses and i was forced to retire prematurely from the world of WWW dot com.

6) 2007 (October): I was ordered to leave my Comfort Zone to the place that i should have visited 3 decades ago, which also happens to be the only division that i haven't set my foot on.

7) 2007 (November): Create the Discomfort Zone, which is my first cyber project.

8) 2008 (Jun):I was tagged for the first time and it was by Teacher Maurine.

Late December 2007, it rains heavily for a few days. Many low lying areas were flooded. This hill slope dwellings were not spared from danger either. One night after christmas a land slide occured. The death toll was numbered at 4.

One year latter, this is how the disaster area looks like. Most of the 'scar' is covered with grass and scrubs. Seems that nothing has happened here before.

Few houses were still standing even the foundation doesn't looks stable. Only houses that are badly damaged are dismantled, and the rubble cleared.

One year latter, seems that there was never any human tragedy took place here. Life goes on as usual and people still dwell those houses that were not dismantle. Danger still lurks and it comes to one thing, is human life so cheap that visible danger are taken so lightly?

Tattoo

In the good old days, the male members of the Iban community have tattoo carved on their skin. Usually those designs have their special meanings.

Modern days the tattoo are more like paintings. The designs shows the desire and fantasy of the owner.

Tattoo of the older generation are simple design . Mostly it shows the iban culture and to some extend it is about the environment where he lives.

The tattoo is done using the traditional method and done manually.

These are navigational markers are found and seen along the Rejang river, especially along the Tanjong Manis- Sarikei route.

As seen from certain angle, the markers look like these. These markers are also equipted with navigational lights which are powered by solar panels.

The perimeter surrounding these markers are regularly cleared and prevents the outgrowth from obstructing the view.

To me,these navigational markers are still a mistery. What are the meaning of these signs? Can some one help me out?

The above notice literally means, feeding the fish at "Sistem Tagang Sg.Engkatit" once a week commencing from 26 May 2008.

Sistem Tagang is basically a mean to maintain the ecological balance of a river. It also prevents unsystematic harvesting of fishes and other marine life. Tagang is an Iban word which means refrain and sistem tagang literally means, a system which refrains someone from catching fishes and other marine life and offenders will be dealt with rules and regulations that has been laid down by the Central Committee.

Caution : It is an offense to catch marine life between Lubuk Kelibang and Nanga Ransal. Whoever is caught doing so will be penalized in accordance with the rules and regulations that has been laid down by the Central Committee of Sistem Tagang, Sg. Engkatit, Yong,Kapit.

Long Singut : The people

Our arrival was greeted by kids. They seems to be undisturbed by presence of strangers.

Some adults that we met in the Longhouse. Not many were present as our visit was unscheduled. During this time of the year, not many were at home as most of them are busy planting and tending their paddy fields. They farm lots were far away and they usually hitch hiked on logging vehicles.

The elders, especially the ladies have elongated ear lobes. This is a dying tradition as the younger generation does not fancy having long ears. Never the less, they do have their arms tattooed like their elders did.

Long Singut: Ruai

Long Singut being a Kenyah settlement has a very distinctive different in the long house outlook if compared to the Ibans.

This is what the ruai of Long Singut Longhouse looks like. It's more like a corridor where they have sitting platform made at the side.

In an Iban Longhouse, the corridor is walled and called the ruai and it serves as the common sitting room.

Long Singut: The descent

This is the drop zone. Here you have to be prepared for the descent, which might take half an hour or so. The path might be slippery and your foot wear have to be proper or bare footed is also an option.

The hill side is steep and slippery. To make the steps, the hill side have to be dug in the shape of ladders. During early morning and rainy days, those steps are slippery, one missed step could land you in the valley below.

For those who are not used to this type of surface, a helpful hand from the local is very much needed.

To get across, we have to pass through this river.......Balleh River. The river is shallow and has rocky bottom and to make the matter worst, the flow is fast and swift. To navigate, the passage, the woman folks use poles.

Save and dry we reached the other side. Our drop zone was the one on the right of the pic.

Long Singut :View

Long Singut is a Kenyah settlement and it is situated at the upper reaches of Balleh River, a tributary of the mighty Rejang River.

Majority of the Kenyah here were from Indonesia or were of Indonesian descendants as the Indonesian border is about one walking day away.

To reach the longhouse you have to walk on foot and mind you, the journey down was never plain sailing.

This is how Long Singut looks like from the main road. To reach here it's a whole day journey from Putai.

When passing by the jungle trek or logging camp roads, a sight like this is very much welcome for some people.

To the untrained eyes, there is nothing unique to this plant......it's just seems that, it is growing new leaves.

But if you are the deer hunter, it's a very good sign. The height from the ground level where the new leaves grows, shows how big the deer is.

This one shows that, the deer frequents this place regularly. This is evident from the recent nibbed bud.

Changing Tide

In this pic you could observe that there is a very distinctive contrast on the surface of the water. On the left, the surface looks polluted and the one on the right looks clear. What causes this phenomenon?

Twice a day, there is a change of tides. When the tide is at it's ebb, the incoming and outgoing tides are very slow moving. This pic was taken at the estuary of Sarawak River. The sea was rather calm, so the confronting line could be seen clearly.

The continuous line made by the tides could be seen as far as the eyes could see.

The "battle" between the two tides will be dragging on. You'll only realized that it high tide by the gradual rise of water level.

Sibu Express Terminal

Sibu express terminal has the heaviest riverine traffic in the state. Not only it connects the towns and villages along the mighty Rejang River, but it is also the portal to the outside world.

Recently i have the chance to travel to Kuching on board the Express boat, the journey took about 5 hours. The views and sceneries were outstang. I'll do the posting.

Roads sign like this is very common in logging roads. It is very important that you know what it means and strictly follow the rules. Logging road is very dangerous and only experienced drivers are allowed to navigate these roads. The above sign means that you have to drive on the right hand side of the road and give way to the in coming traffic. In this case, the incoming traffic might be lorry laden with some 27-30 tons of timber.

This is the typical view of a logging lorry carrying logs. Please observe the load, road width and condition.

This sign means that you have to drive as close as possible to the left hand side of the road. Look for the incoming traffic and always give way.

This is the petrol kiosk and those tanks are full of diesel. Fuel supply as placed at strategic location so that the lorries and other heavy vehicles can have easy access.

Tonite, wayang pacak was brought back to life donning a new name of layar bestari. Wayang pacak or layar bestari is an open air movie played using a projector which projected the image over an erected giant canvass screen. This was famous in the 70's when the Information Department travels through villages, explaining govt. policies to the rural masses. This type of approach was very successful then.

This is a very very rare sight. Roads were jammed with vehicles and the town square was full with people.

Mostly there were curious people as most of the present generation was not born yet then. I was one of those lucky ones. I could still remember that, boiled maize was the craze then. Corn was cooked using tins and sold at 10 cents each. Now it costs 10 times dearer.

Then the movie was still black and white. Most of the movies shown were about govt. policies and development that have been achieved. Once a while, hit movies were shown.

Tonite it was totally different, a modern drama was shown. In fact it was the first time it was shown to the masses. To make the occasion more memorable, both the MP and the Minister of Information were present.
